Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Canmore Crux?
The Canmore Crux is a high-spirited gravel celebration in the heart of the Rockies. For 2026, we’ve moved to a 4-hour AMLAP format. You (and optionally a partner) have four hours to crush as many laps as possible on our scenic 16 KM course. Expect a mix of fast pavement, smooth gravel, and just enough elevation to keep things interesting.
How does the AMLAP format work?
It’s simple: the clock starts at 12:00 PM and runs for exactly 4 hours. Your goal is to complete As Many Laps As Possible.
Solo: You ride as much (or as little) as you want.
Duo: You and a teammate tag-team the laps, relay-style.
The Finish: Only laps completed before the 4-hour cutoff count toward your total. If you’re solo and decide you’re "one and done," that’s cool too - you can throw in the towel whenever you're ready!
The top female and male, as well as the first place team in each division, will claim victory and take home some epic awards. Laps must be completed before the 4-hour mark to count towards your total. If you’re neck-and-neck with another racer or team, the tie-breaker will come down to the time it took to finish those laps. Get ready to push yourself to the limit!
When and where does the race happen?
The 2026 Canmore Crux kicks off at 12:00 PM on Sunday, June 7, 2026. We start and finish at the Canmore Nordic Centre Stadium (behind the Main Lodge).
How tough is the course?
We’ve redesigned the course to be faster and flowier! It’s a 16 KM loop that mixes pavement and gravel. While we’ve removed some of the "rowdy" hills, it’s still Canmore - so it still serves up some good elevation gain. It’s "easier" on your bike, but the challenge to your lungs is as big as you want to make it.
Do I need a gravel bike?
Nope! Gravel bike, cyclocross bike or mountain bike - totally your choice. The terrain is a mix of gravel, dirt, pavement and the occasional rocky patch. Sorry no e-bikes allowed.
When is race package pickup?
You can grab your race plate and swag the morning of the race at the Canmore Nordic Centre Stadium from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM.
When does race registration close?
Registration closes at midnight on June 3rd, unless we sell out early!
Early Bird Pricing: Available until March 1st.
Regular Pricing: Starts March 2nd. Sign up early to save some cash for post-race treats!
What are the race distances?
The course is a 16 KM loop. How many you do is up to you! Each lap features a mix of rolling pavement and gravel climbs with stunning alpine views.
Will there be finish line medals?
Based on past feedback we will not have finish line medals. However there will be a finisher swag item to commemorate your race!
How do I track my laps during the race?
Race timing and lap tracking will be handled by our timing provider Zone4.
What is the age requirement for participants?
All riders aged 14 and older are welcome to take on the Crux! If you’re a younger rider eager to join, please contact us at events@rnestendurance.com to discuss eligibility and supervision requirements.
Will there be a bike mechanic on course?
We’ll have a bike mechanic stationed at the Nordic Centre Stadium to help with flats or mechanical mishaps. If you have a mechanical issue while you’re out on course, you’re on your own - this is the Crux, after all! Riders should come prepared to handle basic fixes and trailside repairs (or walk it back in to the Stadium). A multi-tool, spare tube, CO2, and a can-do attitude will go a long way out there.
Where can I park?
Parking is available at the Canmore Nordic Centre, but remember - you’ll need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass. Grab yours online before race day at https://conservationpass.alberta.ca/kcp.
Do I need to carry bear spray?
Yes. It is a mandatory requirement for all participants (18+) at the Canmore Nordic Centre. We will check at the start line. If you don't have it, you can't ride. For riders under 18, it is at the guardian's discretion.
What if it’s smoky or the weather is bad?
Safety first! If the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is 8 or higher, the event will be cancelled. In the event of heavy rain or trail issues, we may adjust the course to use more of the paved "Banff Trail" to keep things safe and fun. Check your email and our socials for updates leading up to race day!
Can I bring my dog or spectators?
Dogs: Welcome at the Nordic Centre on a leash, but they can't be on the race course.
Spectators: YES! The Stadium is a great place to hang out, ring cowbells, and cheer on riders as they come through for lap transitions.
What’s your cancellation/refund policy?
Registration is non-refundable. However, you can transfer your entry to another rider or defer to next year if you email us at events@rnestendurance.com before May 20th, 2026.
Can I volunteer?
Yes please! Join the crew that makes the Crux happen. Volunteers get the best views, all the good energy, and our eternal gratitude (plus snacks, of course). Whether you’re cheering riders on, handing out refreshments, or marking the route, you’re a vital part of race day.
What happens if I litter?
Leave no trace! We follow strict guidelines to protect the natural beauty of the Canmore Nordic Centre. If you’re caught littering, you’ll be disqualified from the race. Let’s keep the wild wild!
Will there be any swag?
You bet. Every Crux rider gets high-quality race swag worthy of a rugged day on the gravel. It’s our way of thanking you for showing up, grinding it out, and embracing the adventure.
What should I wear? What if the weather turns nasty?
This is Alberta—expect anything. Sunshine, wind, drizzle, maybe even snow-capped peaks. Dress in layers, pack a waterproof shell, and prep your gear for every condition. The race continues in all weather unless safety becomes a concern.
Are headphones allowed?
For safety reasons, headphones are not permitted on the course. Stay alert for other riders, wildlife, and course volunteers - and enjoy the sweet sound of gravel crunching under your tires.
Will there be aid stations?
Yes! We’ll have a well-stocked aid station waiting for you in the Stadium to keep your legs turning and your spirits high. Think hydration, salty snacks, and that friendly volunteer who tells you it’s “mostly downhill from here” (we promise they mean well).
Important: We are a Zero-Waste Event! To keep our mountains beautiful, the Canmore Crux is a cup-free race. We will not have any disposable cups at the aid station. You’ll need to bring your own reusable bottle or hydration pack to refill. We’ll provide the fluids; you provide the vessel!
What happens if I need medical help on course?
Medical staff will be on site and stationed along the route as well as volunteers. If you need assistance, let a volunteer or medical personnel know immediately.
